How To Save Your Progress in Diablo 4?

They don’t. Because the game is connected to the Diablo 4 servers, a player’s game state is constantly being saved thanks to autosave. As such, players won’t have to worry about saving the game with the checkpoint system.

While the game is always saving a player’s inventory and loot, it doesn’t always save everything else. If a player is in the middle of a dungeon and quits, they will have all the loot they picked up, but they will appear back in the main city upon reconnecting, meaning they will have to progress through the dungeon again.

There are checkpoints for quests, so not all progress is lost, but players should still be careful when doing longer-form content like dungeons.

Are There Save Protections in Case a Player Disconnects in Diablo 4?

Yes, there are. Because the save data is tied to the always online connection, Blizzard has introduced two new ways of protecting players in the case of a disconnect:

  • Auto Loot Pickup
  • Scroll of Escape

Auto loot pickup happens when a player disconnects. If there is a rare or higher quality on the ground when a player disconnects, it will be added to the player’s inventory when they reconnect. This way, players will never miss out on a good drop due to disconnect.

The Scroll of Escape is a hardcore-only item but is incredibly useful. A rare drop found past level 20, the scroll of escape can be used to instantly return to a main city. However, the real power of the scroll lies in its passive ability. If a player has one of these consumables and disconnects, they will immediately be teleported to the main city.

Characters generally persist in the world for several seconds after disconnecting, so it is easy for a hardcore character to die in these situations. With the scroll on hand, hardcore players will never have to worry about a disconnect death again!

With no need to worry about saving, players should be happy to throw themselves into dangerous challenges. Sanctuary is a dangerous place, and death is inevitable. Still, it’s comforting to know that, while we may all still fear death, we won’t have to fear a missed save.
